Curtis Stigers
Pocklington Arts Centre was the venue for Curtis Stigers sell out show. The singer, songwriter, saxophonist and his ensemble delivered seductive renditions of the works from various well known writers as well as his own work. The evening was magic as Curtis told the 200 capacity audience it was like singing in a front room, very intimate, and enjoyable, com paired to some of the venues he had played.
Curtis has a unusual voice, slightly reminiscent of soulful south American singers, very refreshing. Coupled with the talented saxophone playing, it makes a heady mix backed up by stand up base, piano and drums. Just perfect for this venue, not over the top PA, enough to reinforce the acoustic instruments to every corner with out discomfort, yet with bags of feeling, well done all.
John Mayall
Hull City Hall was the venue chosen by John Mayall & The Blues Breakers for an evening of consummate glory to any one with an ear for quality blues, dished out by the master himself. The man is seventy ish but that does not stop him, the quality was superb, a mix of the old ones blended seamlessly with new material. Mike Taylor the well known guitar player from the Rolling Stones was on stage playing along with Hank playing base and Buddy playing a butifully set up fender strat that had seen many happy hours on stage with the paint worn off with repeated use, Buddy made it sing. These guys are from all over the place Hank & Buddy coming over from USA for the tour a truly international mix and very enjoyable too.
Franz Fedinand
Hull Arena was the venue for the gig, a sellout capacity audience seemed to really appreciate the guys on stage. High octane sound too. Scotland is good for amber nectar produced from those hills and glens, however, Glasgow has produced a fine foursome here, Alex with his vocal and guitar talent ably helped by Nick on guitar keyboards and vocal backing. Bobs base rally sent vibrations through the venue, I placed my camera gear on one of the flight cases left of stage to get some gear. I thought it was going to vibrate right off the end. Paul's percussion really underpinned the songs to perfection nothing flashy just right. Well done guys for supporting one of the smaller venues in Hull, the audience jugging by there enthusiasm were having a hoot of a time.
The Strokes
A Sellout gig here in Hull, if the audience was anything to go by, they were really into the whole experience. The security staff were kept busy hauling bodys out of the crowd surfing department. Up on the balcony it was hairy, the sound system was so powerfully it gave a really pleasing tremor to the building. However when the crowd got really in to things by standing up and stomping a way, I thought the balcony would give way. Still I suppose the building stood up to the second world war without falling down, It certainly tested the foundations on Saturday night. I have never seen so many flat screens on the mixing desks ever, a shed load but they helped produce the goods. A Stunning sound and light show and a great atmosphere.
Beautiful South
I thought it was going to be something special as the features editor of Hull Daily Mail rung me on Thursday morning to confirm I was going to photograph the Beautiful South at Hull City Hall.
I tuned up at the venue when the support act was playing the hall was packed, usually the
The concert, the music, well, the guys did the business effortlessly. I particularly liked the brass section contribution to the songs it really gave impact to the numbers a very good mix. The captivated audience just lapped it up singing along to the more well known songs. Listening and enjoying the newer songs showing there appreciation in loads of applause and arm waving, even a St Georges England flag being waved. Sod the foot ball they have not a monopoly on flag waving, this audience was rocking and they were showing it.
As I watched the show from the balcony I looked down on the audience and I could see all the glowing lights of the mobile phones as the gigers were taking photos. How thing have changed at one time photography at gigs was a definat no no. You cant stop it now, these camera phones are every where now. I have even seen the security staff brandishing them too.
Lost Prophets
Review by Holly Roach
When I went to Hull Ice Arena on November 29th to see Lost Prophets perform I was only aware of what I would experience from the help of their website that allowed me to play some tracks from their current album , Liberation Transmission, including the well received single, A Town Called Hypocrisy, and a brief knowledge of them.
The crowd took well to all the songs, a nice mixing of hits, new releases from their current album and old favourites, cheering and clapping as ordered by the band and on queue jumped up and down dancing when instructed and by their own fruition to match, with a few mini mosh pits forming throughout the full crowd.
The audience seemed to be comprised largely of youth, with a firm fan base in the teenage market that all seemed well behaved that no trouble or fights broke out that I spotted!&
The band managed to shout, sing, chat and play their way through the evening with confidence and style and with a light show to match their different music tempos and styles, and refreshingly they didnt bother with the whole encore charade as every other band seems to do, to my dismay, instead they stayed put, chatted a bit about not doing the norm encore rituals of tea drinking and fag smoking, or whatever it is rockers do when the crowd isnt watching but still waiting, and then they performed their final show down to a visible display of affection throughout the arena. The crowd throughout the night were well voiced in their appreciation of the songs and of the band. For a début gig in Hull the Welsh boys did good, with the show sold out and promised to return next year, demanding they see everyone within the audience once again, and judging by the atmosphere and events of the night Im sure they will be seeing some familiar faces very soon& and I may even join them, free pass or not...
